Cleveland Ballet is going to the dark side with its first show at Playhouse Square for the 2024-2025 season. The company will perform “Dracula” and “The Masque of the Red Death” on October 18-19 at Playhouse Square’s Mimi Ohio Theatre.
In an exciting new collaboration, the music for all performances will be performed live by members of the Cleveland Pops Orchestra under the baton of Carl Topilow. Both stories feature original scores composed by J. Mark Scearce.

VERMILION — Just as the summer season is winding down in this tourist town, one of its most high-profile summer residents is planning a visit.

The Cleveland Ballet will return to its part-time home for a performance Sept. 21 to take place on the Village Green, the park just across the street from the company’s summer residence, the Harbourtown Fine Arts Center.
​
The event, “Encore in Vermilion,” is the ballet’s annual summer residency event at HFAC. It was scheduled a bit later in the season than last year, working around the performers’ vacations, said Jim Chapple, chairman of the HFAC’s board.

Performing former Carolina Ballet Artistic Director Robert Weiss’ 2008 full-length Sleeping Beauty ballet on Saturday, April 27, at Playhouse Square’s Connor Palace Theatre, the company, which was already quite good, showed it had gotten even better under Bourtasenkov. A newfound unified stylistic look and corps de ballet togetherness were bolstered by dancing that was full-out and full of passion.

Cleveland Ballet will end its season with four performances of “Sleeping Beauty” from April 25-27. The classic tale, set to a score by composer Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, will be staged at Playhouse Square’s Connor Palace. Tickets start at $28.
The choreography, new to Cleveland Ballet, is from Carolina Ballet’s renowned Founding Artistic Director Robert Weiss. This production is especially sentimental for Artistic Director Timour Bourtasenkov who, in 2008, played the Prince in Carolina Ballet’s premier production.

Tchaikovsky’s “The Sleeping Beauty” was the composer’s longest ballet. For the dancers who perform the beloved fairy tale, it is also known as one of the most technically challenging performances.

Bourtasenkov brings a breadth of experience to the artistic director job. A native of Moldova, he received his dance training at the Moldavian Opera House and the Bolshoi Ballet. He danced with Pennsylvania Ballet (now Philadelphia Ballet) and New Jersey Ballet and was a founding member of Carolina Ballet. As a choreographer, Bourtasenkov has created works for Carolina Ballet, Ballet Hawaii, New Jersey Ballet, and Infinity Ballet. He was an assistant professor at East Carolina University from 2006–2009, has been on the faculty of American Ballet Theatre’s summer intensive, and was a judge and teacher for Youth America Grand Prix.
Bourtasenkov recently discussed his approach to his new role at this crucial moment for the company, and his vision for Cleveland Ballet going forward.

Similarly, Cleveland Ballet gives its students the chance to dance with members of its own professional company during “The Nutcracker.”

“There's more for student dancers to do in ‘Nutcracker’ than almost any other ballet,” said Cleveland Ballet Interim Executive Director Howard Bender. “Getting the kids through the discipline of rehearsals, having them side by side with the dancers and watching what they do, that's an invaluable experience for a young artist.”

Of course, under prosperity I do not mean the level of artists’ salaries (although this, too, is important), but rather how it is acquiring mighty muscles right before our eyes: workshops for producing the luxurious costumes and stylish decorations, rehearsal halls and gyms, all kinds of auxiliary facilities, and medical equipment. ... The Cleveland Ballet closes its season Saturday in Vermilion with a special performance at German’s Villa, bringing culture and fine arts right to town. After all, that was the mission of the Harbourtown Fine Arts Center when it was first established. Professional ballet dancers came to Naples to teach kids some moves and expose them to the arts. Members of the Cleveland Ballet stopped by the Boys & Girls Club of Collier County for a private event. Thirteen elementary and middle school students had an up-close look and lesson as the dancers demonstrated proper techniques. The kids and teens are part of the Boys & Girls Club dance program.
